TURF EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
(ATHLETIC MAINTENANCE)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, this position operates and transports reel mowers, riding mowers, and zero
turn mowers in support of the Athletic Maintenance Division and directs Construction Maintenance
Workers on site for athletic field markings, maintenance and turf management.

Supervisor B.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Operates turf mowing equipment such as reel mowers, batwing mowers, and zero turn mowers on
athletic fields.
Operates topdressors, aerators, loaders, and tractors with various turf maintenance
attachments.
Conducts initial preparation and setup, marking, and maintenance of various types of
athletic fields.
Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, cleans equipment, and inspects equipment for
damages.
Assists in making repairs to bleachers, goals, fencing, tennis nets, soccer nets, trash barrels,
benches, and other equipment at various athletic sites.
Assists in the maintenance of landscaped areas
to include mulching, pruning, edging, weed control, fertilization, and general upkeep.
May serve as a lead worker in directing onsite maintenance required for various types of athletic fields,
sports tournaments, and mowing operations.
Performs minor carpentry work to include hanging signs, repairing dugouts, building ramps, and
installation of various other equipment at athletic sites.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
Equipment Operation – Basic knowledge of proper procedures for operating, inspecting, and
maintaining assigned equipment related to athletic field maintenance.

Athletic Field Maintenance – Knowledge of common tools, practices and work related to detailed
athletic field preparation, maintenance, and repair.
Safety — Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions and safety regulations related to
athletic field maintenance and other work related activities.
Knowledge of traffic laws and
regulations governing the operation of assigned equipment.
REQUIRED SKILLS
Judgement/Decision Making – Uses logic to understand, analyze and evaluate situations and
exercise sound judgment to make appropriate decisions involving the public and city employees.
Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships
with employees, representatives from other departments and divisions, contractors, NNPS School
division, and the public.

completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology and estimated
schedules.
REQUIRED ABILITIES
Manual Labor – Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of
weather conditions.
Communication – Thorough ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to listen and understand
directions, information, and ideas presented both verbally and in writing.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires 2 years of experience operating turf maintenance equipment.
Some experience maintaining
and setting up athletic fields is preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
An acceptable general background investigation to include a sex offender registry check as well as a
valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
This position requires pre-employment medical evaluation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding
work.
Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling,
crouching, and crawling.
May involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues
or signals.
Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES
Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as
dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, weather, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, animals/wildlife, water
hazards, disease, or pathogenic substances.
