The Role Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal.
Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.
Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.
Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.
Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
This position is for a senior level project lead and subject matter expert engineering designer to serve in E42 Naval Architecture & Weight Engineering.
This position will primarily support all E42 General Arrangement, Technology Insertion, and Conceptual Design activities associated with Ford Class aircraft carrier new ship design and construction, Ford Class Design Services (FCDS), CVN 82+/CVN iCON IRAD and M&PE projects, and CVN fleet modernization activities including HPY responsibilities.
The successful applicant should have extensive experience with naval ship research, arrangement, design, project management, and overall general problem solving.
An extensive knowledge of 3D Product Modeling processes and procedures is desired.
The applicant should also have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with all levels of NAVSEA, SOS, and NNS management as well as other external customers.
Previous aircraft carrier management and construction planning experience is also desired.
A demonstrated ability to train and mentor others is required as well.
This position may involve taking a leadership role in other areas of E42 as needed while also serving as a subject matter expert in the area of CVN General Arrangements and Concept Design requirements and principles as applicable to both CVN78 and CVN68 class contracts as well as internally-funded and government-funded R&D.
This person must be able to coordinate design criteria within engineering while working with other departments to ensure that requirements are properly communicated and met.
Applicants must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently or in groups, and be comfortable directing personnel of various Design positions with only minimal oversight from management.
Must Have Bachelor of Science Degree and 5 years of related experience or 3 years of relevant professional or Designer experience with a Master's Degree or 0 years with a PhD One of the following may be used as equivalent to Bachelor's Degree to meet minimum qualifications: 4 years of related exempt experience 8 years of non-related exempt experience 12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience Nice to Have Extensive knowledge of 3D Product Modeling processes and procedures is desired.
Applicant should also have a proven history of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with all levels of NAVSEA, SOS, and NNS management as well as other external customers.
