JOB DESCRIPTION RESIDUALS FACILITY OPERATOR WATERWORKS Human Resources Department 700 Town Center Drive, Suite 200 Newport News, VA 23606 NEWPORT NEWS, VA Phone: (757) 926-1800 CITY OF OPPORTUNITY Fax: (757) 926-1825 GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position is responsible for operating residuals handling and processing facilities, land applying dewatered residuals, and operating the treatment and pump station facilities for the water treatment plant recycle streams.
Reports to the Residuals Facility Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Operates, monitors and performs light maintenance work to ensure the efficient performance of a wide range of residuals and recycle treatment equipment such as pumps, industrial centrifuges, polymer feeds, mixers, chemical feed systems, pressure filters and instrumentation control devices; inspects condition of motorized equipment to ensure safe operation; follows all safety standards.
Operates a tandem dump truck, front-end loader, land application vehicle, and other motorized equipment as necessary to haul residuals to land application sites and apply de-watered residuals.
Performs a variety of residuals analysis and tests on centrifuge performance; makes process adjustments as necessary; determines required chemical dosages and calibrates chemical feeders; assists in maintaining inventory of chemicals and other supplies.
Collects samples as required to comply with operating permits.
Prepares reports, daily records and documentation as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE  Residual Operations – Knowledge of the principles and practices of residuals pumping and dewatering including centrifuge operations as well as the operation of pressure filters including valves, operators, and control devices.
 Water Treatment - General knowledge of water quality and water treatment process operations.
 Equipment Operation - Knowledge of the proper procedures for operating, inspecting and maintaining assigned equipment as related to residuals treatment and distribution.
 Safety - Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety regulations related to equipment operation, and other work related precautions.

Estimates expected time of completion of elements of work and establishes a personal schedule accordingly.
Implements work activities in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules.
 Mathematics– Ability to perform arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical calculations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires a high school diploma and 3-5 years of experience in water or wastewater operations, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check and a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) permit prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment.
This position requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation, audio evaluation and respirator clearance as well as pre- employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort.
 Some combination of climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
 Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-20 pounds).
 May occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 60 pounds).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of color, sounds, odor, depth, and visual cues or signals.
 Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
