*Job Title: *Certified Medical Assistant *Department: *Nursing *Reports to: *Lead Licensed Practical Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Pediatrician, *Employment Status: *Non-Exempt *Supervisory Responsibilities: *None.
*General Summary* Cares for pediatric patients as part of a collaborative health care team in a medical office setting.
The employee in this position may serve as a triage nurse if designated.
*Essential Job Functions* - Assesses vital signs in pediatric patients as part of work-up process each visit - Interviews clients/parents as part of the patient work-up process - Utilizes a computer and various computer programs, especially the electronic health system - Administers medications to pediatric patients - Administers vaccinations and medications through subcutaneous or intramuscular route - Performs basic lab tests and in-patient procedures - Assists nurse practitioners and physicians in the care of patients - Performs basic patient/parent education appropriate to the clinic setting - Observes appropriate measures for infection control - Observes appropriate measures for patient safety - Triages patients in the clinic or over the phone - Provides medical advice and direction, within the appropriate scope of practice and under the appropriate supervision, to patients and families - Acts as a liaison between nurse practitioners and physicians, and their patients, in the clinic and over the phone - Processes and transmits prescriptions under the proper direction and within company protocol - Performs other duties as assigned *Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities* - Knowledge of and appropriate application of the nursing process - Knowledge of professional theory, practice and procedures - Ability to assess nursing needs of acute and chronically ill patients and their families - Ability to work collaboratively with other health care professionals - Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships - Ability to maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA guidelines - Skill in communicating clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, leadership, and Others.
Ability to use fine motor skills for tasks related to patient care - Skill in BLS and/or other specialized emergency response, as appropriate within the scope of practice - Ability to record activities, document assessments, medication administration, procedures performed, etc.
in accordance with accepted principles of nursing documentation - Ability to use the computer and learn new software programs - Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
- Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds - Ability to remain focused and organized - Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to pediatric patients - Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions Ability to work in an extremely busy ambulatory clinic setting - Ability to work closely and well with others - Ability to work 8 hour shifts, and occasionally to work weekends or overtime - Skill in administering medications and vaccinations by injection - Skill in assessing vital signs in the pediatric patient including: height, weight, temperature, heart rate, head circumference, - blood pressure, 02 saturation, etc.
- Ability to perform routine tests such as vision and hearing, lead, and routine laboratory tests .
- Ability to obtain patient medical history and enter the data in the EHR.
- Ability to operate equipment to administer routine diagnostic test for patients .
- Knowledge of proper technique for sterilizing supplies and equipment.
- Ability to take inventory and submit order requests for medical supplies and materials to the Supervisor.
- Ability to perform basic clerical duties - Ability to use proper phone etiquette when communicating with patients or other health care providers - Ability to schedule appointments .
- Knowledge of proper procedures for specimen collection, storage, and processing - Knowledge of basic medical terminology *Qualifications/Education and Experience* - National Certification as a Medical Assistant - Current BLS certification - Experience in pediatrics and/or rural health preferred - Ability to speak and write using proper English - Ability to use computers and the HER *Physical Requirements* - _Seeing: _Must be able to see well enough to read emails, documents, reports, etc.
- _Hearing: _must be able hear well enough to communicate with other staff, clients, vendors, etc.
Must be able to hear well - enough to assess blood pressure manually using a stethoscope - _Standing/Walking: _Must be able to move about the office, including up and down stairs - _Climbing/stooping/kneeling: _Must be able to stoop or kneel to pick up items, assist parents and children in performing - necessary tasks (removing shoes, stepping onto the scale, assuming the correct position for height assessment, etc).
- _Lifting/pulling/pushing: _Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds - _Fingering/grasping/feeling: _Must be able to type and perform technical tasks.
