The Role This position is for a senior level project lead and subject matter expert engineering designer to serve in the E49 Program Office for the Aircraft Carrier Product Model and iDS support area.
This position will primarily support all Design departments’ activities associated with CVN 78 Class aircraft carrier new ship design and construction, as well as commissioned CVN68 and CVN 78 Class ship maintenance, overhaul, and modernization as needed.
This position will involve taking a leadership role in all areas of ACE while also serving as a subject matter expert in the following areas: ship configuration management, Digital ship alteration development, Life cycle product model configuration management, and planning yard digital initiatives.
Other areas of interest would be developing the coordination between Product Model and Drawing schedules to ensure they are properly scheduled to reduce rework and serving as central point of contact for NX TeamCenter issues/improvements for ACE.
Major duties will involve providing project oversight and management of the development of new construction and commissioned ship fabrication and modification documentation (Technical Authority (TA) model files / drawings), development and standardization of design best practices, implementation of new design tool functionality, development of training programs for department designers at all levels, leading designer quality issue investigations and developing corrective actions, leading teams focused on resolving emergent high priority issues, and serving as an advisor to management and customers on system designs and project development.
Designs major components or major portions of a functional system to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
Develops basic data and makes preliminary layouts, sketches, and notes necessary to present design proposal.
Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.
Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development.
Makes layouts of complex assemblies and details parts of devices, mechanisms, and structures.
Checks completed layouts and drawings for clarity, completeness, conformity to standards, procedures, specifications, and accuracy of calculations and dimensioning.
Identifies design errors, omissions, and other deficiencies, and recommends revisions and/or improvements in design layout to responsible engineers or designers.
Must Have Bachelor of Science Degree and 5 years of related experience; 3 years of relevant professional or Designer experience with a Master's Degree; 0 years with a PhD.
4 years of related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree; 8 years of non-related exempt experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree; 12 years of non-exempt, Manufacturing, Military, Shipbuilding or Trades experience can be substituted for Bachelor's Degree.
Nice to Have Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in groups with only minimal oversight from management.
A demonstrated ability to train and mentor others is also desired.
Extensive experience with research, design, project management, and overall general problem solving related to building and maintaining platform systems.
An extensive knowledge of 3D Product Model processes and procedures is desired as this person would be taking a key role in developing new processes and maintaining existing ones.
History of resolving complex problems with limited supervision while successfully communicating with all levels of NNS management, NAVSEA, and external customers (e.
g.
Type Commander, public and private shipyards).
