I am selling this very old, trimmed in gold stein to the highest offer.
I had this stein professionally appraised.
Following is the reply I received on December 15, 2012,
“This German stein often referred to as a Regimental Stein, to hold 2 liters of beer, the design representing the motto of a regiment at the time (stein made from 1870-1910).
The mottos that you have listed translate to Strong in Arms, Courage in the Heart, Free in Spirit.
Some of these steins also contained a lithopane in the bottom.
Hold the stein to bright light (as if you were finishing a drank) and see if you can see a scene in the bottom.
The ones with lithos are worth a bit more.
(My note: there is no scene in the bottom of this stein.
)
Many companies made these regimentals without marking the bottom.
These include Merkelbarcher and Wick, Simon Peter Getz, and Villeroy and Boch.
(My note: there is the number 1264 on the bottom.
) The number on the bottom of your stein is the shape number, but I could not fine a company in my books that has that stein number (many are unrecorded if early).
From the information you have given me with the photo, I would guess that your stein has a current value of $300.
00.
” I would accept a reasonable offer.
