Position Information Position Number H0864W Position Title Office Assistant (Modern Languages) Employment Category Hourly Location William & Mary Department 3KD510 Modern Languages Dept Unit Mission Statement The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at William & Mary is the oldest program in modern languages in the United States.
The department traces its beginning to the establishment of a professorship in modern languages at William & Mary in a curriculum reform instituted by Thomas Jefferson in 1779.
Today that single professorship has grown to more than 50 faculty members offering courses in eight languages, literatures, and cultures.
Faculty members of every rank are engaged in teaching at all levels, in study abroad programs, in a variety of research activities, and in service to the university, the community and the profession.
Position Summary William & Mary’s Department of Modern Languages invites qualified applications for the 10-month, part-time hourly position of Office Assistant, whose efforts will assist in supporting the programmatic and administrative needs of eight language/cultural programs and more than 50 faculty members.
Primary responsibilities include: Serving as first point of contact to office visitors, students and faculty, and providing excellent customer service and positive support for the largest department within A&S.
Monitoring and maintaining office supply and equipment inventories Assisting with department and student events Serving as study abroad administrative liaison Following up on facilities work orders and building needs Assisting with records management Maintaining the department’s website and on-line presence Conditions of Employment This is an hourly position authorized for a max of 10 hours/week and does not include employee benefits.
Satisfactory completion of a pre-employment background check is required.
Work schedule is within regular business hours as determined by the Department Chair.
Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc.

All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve month period beginning May 1 each year.
