JOB DESC RIPTION POLICE INVESTIGATIVE TECHNICIAN (ECONOMIC CRIMES) POLICE DEPARTMENT Human Resources NEWPORT NEWS, VA Department GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES Under general supervision, this position is responsible for assisting in economic crime investigations, which may include reviewing cases and financial documentation, researching and analyzing relevant data and information and contacting financial institutions or individuals involved.
Reports to a Police Sergeant.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Reviews and analyzes information related to suspected economic crimes including, but not limited to, bank statements, law enforcement reports and organization documentation and prepares summary reports for case files to assist the investigators, department management and prosecutor attorneys.
Conducts research and reports on identified criminal evidence or suspicious entries.
Researches background reports of investigative targets by reviewing a variety of reports to include Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), court reports, etc.
; and prepares statistical reports regarding arrests, convictions, charges and other related information; reviews arrest records for criteria that may meet the standards to send to federal court.
At the guidance of case detectives, reviews surveillance videos and photos to collect additional evidence.
Makes necessary inquiries and schedules interviews with citizen victims and witnesses to obtain additional information; collects evidence; communicates with law enforcement agencies and banking institutions to coordinate and secure evidence or case information transfer; transcribes statements.
May be responsible for scanning case files into Laser fiche and oversee quality control of the scanned documentation.
Prepares specialized data reporting and assists investigators with preparation of legal documents; drafts letters and memorandums for case detectives.
Performs other duties as assigned.

PC# 58926 Page 1 of 3 Revised: 10/01/2023 REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE  Law Enforcement – Basic knowledge of Police Department policies, procedures, operations, and information systems.
Basic knowledge of the State and Federal Criminal Justice Systems.
 Accounting/Finance – Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and practices to include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
 Technology – Knowledge of general office equipment and personal computers to include word processing, spreadsheet, and related law enforcement computer programs and databases.
Knowledge of internet research techniques and various commercial databases.
Knowledge of highly specialized case management, intelligence, and charting computer software.
 Customer Service – Thorough knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services.
This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
REQUIRED SKILLS  Computer Skills – Utilizes a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, and related software to effectively complete a variety of administrative tasks with reasonable speed and accuracy.
 Interpersonal Relationships – Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations.
Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit.
 Time Management - Ability to plan and organize daily work routine.
Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology.
REQUIRED ABILITIES  Communication – Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs.
Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner.
 Judgement and Decision Making – Ability to use logic and reasoning to understand, analyze, and evaluate situations and exercise good judgment to make appropriate decisions.
 Mathematics – Ability to perform difficult arithmetic, algebraic, and statistical applications to audit financial transactions.
Ability to employ accounting principles and practices in the analysis and reporting of financial data.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Requires an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice, Accounting, Business Administration or a closely related field and 2-4 years of related administrative or technical experience in Police operations.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state and federal criminal history check; sex offender registry and credit check.
PC# 58926 Page 2 of 3 Revised: 10/01/2023 May be subject to the restrictions of a federal 6(e) order which restricts discussion and further dissemination of information collected on federally adopted cases to unauthorized personnel.
A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS  Requires the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work.
 Some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds).
 Tasks may involve extended periods of time at keyboard or work station.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS  Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.
 Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
